From a Sarajevo War Survivor:
Experiencing horrible things that can happen in a war - death of parents and
friends, hunger and malnutrition, endless freezing cold, fear, sniper attacks.

1. Stockpiling helps. but you never no how long trouble will last, so locate
    near renewable food sources.
2. Living near a well with a manual pump is like being in Eden.
3. After awhile, even gold can lose its luster. But there is no luxury in war
quite like toilet paper. Its surplus value is greater than gold's.
4. If you had to go without one utility, lose electricity - it's the easiest to
do without (unless you're in a very nice climate with no need for heat.)
5. Canned foods are awesome, especially if their contents are tasty without
heating. One of the best things to stockpile is canned gravy - it makes a lot of
the dry unappetizing things you find to eat in war somewhat edible. Only needs
enough heat to "warm", not to cook. It's cheap too, especially if you buy it in
    bulk.
6. Bring some books - escapist ones like romance or mysteries become more
valuable as the war continues. Sure, it's great to have a lot of survival
guides, but you'll figure most of that out on your own anyway - trust me, you'll
have a lot of time on your hands.
7. The feeling that you're human can fade pretty fast. I can't tell you how many
people I knew who would have traded a much needed meal for just a little bit of
toothpaste, rouge, soap or cologne. Not much point in fighting if you have to
lose your humanity. These things are morale-builders like nothing else.
8. Slow burning candles and matches, matches, matches

The most important first step once all hell breaks lose is to find friends and likeminded people and form your own community for sharing and protection - that's of course if you don't have your private bunker dug into some mountain...

Nobody should wait till all hell breaks loose to find frinds and likeminded people, by then not will you have lost the joys of sharing with them and preparing for whatever is to come but in all likelyhood it will be too late for that

James - "Excellent List" - many thanks for reposting - .. . the blue dude!  (I printed off a copy to use as a checklist)

A good pocket knife is essential, "A man lost in the woods without a knife, is half dead already". Any knife made in China, is like no knife at all.

Yes, I would be without my Swiss Army pocket knife - the only thing it doesn't do is shoot bullets....

My husband and I plan to "bug in" on our small farm, so all of our preps have been toward this end.  One thing he has insisted on for years is acquiring a forge, anvil, tools and supplies, as well as learning to forge itself.  Everything he has was either homemade or purchased at auctions or used places or garage sales for very, very cheap.  Even though it's old, it's still serviceable, though, so he's satisfied.  Another thing is, knowledge and skill sets that aren't popular today but would be useful if the SHTF, in other words, become a "jack of all trades".

Personally, I have always had a tendency to 'stash' things like extra material, sewing supplies, canning supplies, and I have a soft spot for antiques, so I keep around certain things from yard sales and thrift shops like kerosene lamps, (I have about 20 old and new ones as well as extra globes and wicks), cast iron, especially the collectable kind as they are better made, and DH and I both admire and collect old tools, like hand drills, pull knives, egg beaters, canners, etc.  My kitchen is a flea market owners wet dream!  Still looking for a treadle sewing machine in useable shape that I can afford, though.  *sigh*
