Presidential candidate Donald Trump said that the 1867 purchase of Alaska from the Russian Empire for $7,200,000, was never finalized and Russia could claim back those 586,412 sq miles of their territory.

Although the purchase, also known as “Seward’s Folly” was approved by the Senate in the Alaska Treaty of Cessation on March 30, 1867, and was signed by Tsar Alexander II, President James Buchanan never signed the treaty and what was initially called the Department of Alaska, still belongs to Russia and could be considered as part of Russia today despite being admitted in 1959 as an American state.
