Social news site Reddit has launched an anti-harassment policy that allows it to ban users who bully others.

In a blogpost, the site - known for its liberal attitude towards free speech and anonymity - said it was "unhappy with harassing behaviour".

Users who believe they are being bullied will be able to email Reddit and report it.

But some users complained that the policy is vague and not in keeping with Reddit's promotion of free speech.

The site announced the changes, for which it has been preparing for six months, in a blogpost on Thursday.

"We've seen many conversations devolve into attacks against individuals," the San Francisco company wrote, adding that it is also seeing more and different types of harassment than in the past.

For example, some users are harassing people across platforms and posting links on Reddit to private information on other sites, it said.

It added that it defines harassment as "systematic and/or continued actions to torment or demean someone in a way that would make a reasonable person (1) conclude that reddit is not a safe platform to express their ideas or participate in the conversation, or (2) fear for their safety or the safety of those around them".

Reddit's interim chief executive Ellen Pao - along with two other staffers - introduced the changes

But, in comments posted on the site, users expressed dissatisfaction with the plan.

(ANTIMEDIA) A new preliminary FBI report shows that in 2014, 51 police officers were feloniously killed in the line of duty. The FBI notes that this is an 89% increase from 2013, when only 27 officers were killed on the job. Though the media swiftly parroted this news and noted the “spike” in officers killed on duty, the details tell a more complicated story than a simple jump in homicides.

While the statistics do show that more officers died in 2014 than 2013, the specifics reveal a less than dire picture for America’s police. First, it is true that the number of “ambushes” on officers increased—by a single case (from 7 in 2013 to 8 in 2014). Still, the largest increases came at traffic stops (3 in 2013 to 10 in 2014) and disturbance calls (5 in 2013 to 11 in 2014). The number of “pre-meditated” attacks did jump by 3, but still accounted for one of the smallest increases in officer deaths. While murders during traffic stops and disturbance calls are relevant, they do not denote as much hostility toward police as outright ambushes and pre-meditated attacks.

Further, while any form of murder is tragic, it is important to look at the long-term trends. Even the FBI notes that the annual average number of police deaths from 1980-2014 was 64. This means that in spite of the sensational 89% increase in murder, the 51 figure is still lower than the three-decade average. The National Law Enforcement Officer’s Memorial Fund has also noted that the rate of officer homicides has dropped steadily since the 1970s, where it peaked at an average of 127.

Additionally, almost as many police officers died in accidents as were murdered in 2014. Out of 44 accidental deaths, 28 were car accidents. Of those 28, 15 were not wearing seatbelts.http://www.mintpressnews.com/1100-civilians-were-killed-by-police-in-2014/205641/
TSA Groping Scandal Just Got a Whole Lot Biggertag:12160.info,2015-05-14:2649739:Topic:15573482015-05-14T18:02:35.456ZBARRYhttps://12160.info/profile/BARRY_O

As a result, customer satisfaction with auto insurance companies has reversed course and declined from an all-time high in 2012, according to a recent J.D. Power 2013 U.S. Auto Insurance Study.

Based on a 1000-point scale, overall satisfaction with auto insurance companies is 794, down 10 points from 2012, but still the second-highest rating since the study began in 2000.

"In 2013, there is a sharp rise in the number of customers who have experienced premium increases," says Jeremy Bowler, senior director of the global insurance practice at J.D. Power. "The dollar amount of those increases is also larger, averaging $153 in 2013, compared with an average rate increase of $113 reported in the 2012 study."

Nearly one-third (32%) of customers are most likely to switch insurers when a premium increase is greater than $200. Consumers are most dissatisfied when rate hikes are unexplained and issued without prior notice, making them more likely to switch their policy to another insurer.

Most voters still get their news from television and consider the news reported by the media generally trustworthy.

Fifty-six percent (56%) of Likely U.S. Voters say they get most of their news from TV, including 32% who get it from cable news networks and 24% who get it from traditional network news. A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that another 25% use the Internet as their main source of news, while only 10% still rely on print newspapers. Seven percent (7%) get most of their news from radio. (To see survey question wording, click here.)

Fifty-six percent (56%) of all voters regard the news reported by the media as at least somewhat trustworthy, but that includes just six percent who think it is Very Trustworthy. Forty-two percent (42%) don’t trust the news media, with 12% who believe the news it reports is Not At All Trustworthy.

Nine percent (9%) rated radio as the best source, and seven percent (7%) chose print newspapers. TV broadcast news was considered the most reliable, followed by the Internet and newspapers.

Forty-one percent (41%) of voters think the average media reporter is more liberal than they are, down slightly from 46% in June 2011. Fifteen percent (15%) are not sure.

Listen to the Good, the Bad and the Strange with Abby Martin — Breaking the Sets

On this episode of Breaking the Set, Abby Martin talks to Peace Activist and Author of ‘The General’s Son’, Miko Peled (MUST WATCH VIDEO), about the main misconceptions about the Israeli Palestinian conflict, and about the proposed idea of irradicating a ‘Jewish State’ all together.

In the second half of the show, Abby talks to RT Correspondents Liz Wahl and Anastasia Churkina, about the media sensationalizing and exploiting tragic events like the Sandy Hook mass shooting instead of focusing on the systemic problems that breed the violence. BTS wraps up the show with a little viewer feedback on a new segment called ‘troll spotting’.
