More than 39 million prescriptions for anti-depressants were written in 2009 compared with nine million in 1991, said the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

Most doctors have lost the ability to do a clinical exam and look for the underlying cause of depression such as thyroid problems etc.  It takes only seconds to write a prescription rather than spend an hour doing a proper exam. So time wise it's much more profitable to write prescriptions.
