Food Storage 101

Ask yourself this question- In an emegency do you want to stand in a soup line?

Why Have Food Storage:
This has been the subject of my studies for about 20 or more years now, and just like yesterday it still fascinates me to no end.

I have a lovely family of 4 children all grown now, but when they were young I started out by trying to find ways to feed and care for them on a strict budget, because I had a frugal husband at the time.

However in time, what I learned is probably the most important information a person could have in a time of crisis. With my knowledge and the help of some very wise individuals who helped me understand the importance of storing, and completing a food storage plan, I got into storing a years supply of food for my family for security.

Throughout my years of reading and studying about different storeable foods I can help you plan the best food storage program for the best prices.

I have read many books on the subject, attended many a lectures all pertaining to food storage. I have come to learn exactly what's needed to know in order to begin. I have taught many classes on the subject and organized Family Preparedness fairs that were a huge success!

What I have found in most cases is that most people really do understand the importance of storing food, but they just don't know where to begin and/or are overwhelmed with the idea of where to start . There are some very hard and fast rules in storing foods, some of this information will save you a lot of time and money if followed correctly.

I will be breaking this down as simply as I can, teaching you ways to store food for you and your loved ones, as cost effective as possible.

I must stress to anyone interested in embarking on such a task to be open minded about this and not think it's just for them crazy Mormons, Mountain people or Militia's. Storing food is not paranoid, it's just smart!

The best way to think about it is like you do with insurance.

Do you have insurance?
So you pay your insurance, be it Home, Auto, or Health, you pay, yearly/weekly/bi weekly right? It's a high priority for the "JUST IN CASE scenario." But at the end of the year after paying you didn't die, get injured or have auto accident, but in the case something did happen to you, it was there for you right and I'm sure you were so glad you were covered weren't you?

Well food storage should be thought of in that same manner. It will be there for you when you need it and if you don't need it, unlike your insurance policy you can eat it all up and replace it when needed and if you do need it, then you and your loved one's don't starve to death in an emergency situation or disaster!

Nothing lost in my opinion, as you would have with a paid insurance policy. Food storage is security just like that insurance policy, it gives you peace of mind if the "JUST IN CASE!"

Most of us have been very fortunate with abundance, most of us have not had to look into our children's eyes and tell them "sorry, but there just isn't any food to eat!" Sorry would hardly be appropriate, I'm sure you would ever want to utter those words.

In the wake of 911 and the current economic crisis our wealthy nation is all of the sudden going through, we should use history to teach and educate us on reality. Reality is we do not know for certain that we will always have food, we will always have an abundance and we can always feed our family. People all over are losing job's and the future is uncertain to many of us, but it doesn't have to be now while we still have plenty.

During the great depression, food was money, food was a matter of life and death because there were no jobs, there was no money. Farmers can not grow their massive crops, infrastructure can come to a screeching halt in days and then what?

Storing food is economical sound and smart as a way to INSURE you and your families are taking care of no matter how dire the situation or current events are. And the most beautiful thing about it is, if you store foods you normally eat, and nothing does happens to upset your way of life, then you have lost nothing at all! Instead you probably saved yourself a ton of money in the long run, because in my 52 years of life, I have never seen any food prices go down, instead they have continually grown each and ever year.

In conclusion I can see nothing at fault in storing food it is simply the smartest and most sound investment you will ever make for you and your loved one's.

We've went too with smaller Mylar bags instead of a 5 gallon bag. This to me makes sense. We open what we need and the rest stays sealed until we need it and in a 5 gallon bucket.

I've bought a lot of books on preserving and killing and dressing out animals. I've dressed animals before but it's been so long I forget on some of them.  One of the better books is the Air Force Survival Manual on a broader scale.  Books on traps and snares isn't a bad idea either. If you haven't grown your own, light reading on how, though most over dramatize it.  Plus growing is region and sometimes acre specific. That part is best to observe and ask around.

I wasted a lot of money on short term food i do not normally eat.  I went with long term food stored in mylar and last for 25 yrs..  solutions for science has been pretty helpful to me.  http://www.solutionsfromscience.com/?cat=22  WISE  Co has been pretty good too.  http://wisefoodstorage.com/  they have other interesting things too, like stove in a can one of my favorites.

Lynn, We don't stock heavy on expiration date foods, maybe like a years worth at tops (when combined with other things). Go with stuff that would sustain like rice, but get the Enriched, it lasts longer. As our stuff with expiration dates draw even close we give it away, alwasy somebody hungry out there. If we miss any we put in in our garden for a soil builder. Most of our stuff though we grow and can ourselves. Water we don't worry about. We have a well and I have a hand pump just in case, plus 2 springs and a cistern nearby. I also built a small Colloidal Silver maker and keep some .9999 Silver handy.

So basically stock big one the long term storage stuff. Light on dated stuff. Make friends sharing the excess. Know where all possible water source are. Have back up energy for cold stuff. Full freezers cost less to operate and stay colder longer. The world is changing but I don't see it ending no time soon, so enjoy what you have while you have it. It'll be over before you know it. :)

Storing water long term - order the bottles; the ones for
water coolers. They are sealed and it's great water with nothing added. Most companies deliver right to your door. Once opened it won't go bad, just cover the bottle
with plastic wrap!! The human body can not survive with
out water. Food is about 14 days.

Well, for one thing every damned thing has an expiriry date stamped on it - how do you get around that? Ignore it and simply stock up anyway? I seen a can of tomatoe paste blow up as soon as the can opener was
inserted in the can (to open it). It was all over my girl
friend; the ceiling; and parts of the wall. It was past the
expiriry date. And space to put all this food? Where do
we put it when there is limited space? I have a pantry &
I try to keep it stocked up, but it's big enough for one person only; I have no basement. What do I do?
Down sizing from a big house to a small home is a problem - too much furnature; space is limited there as
well; even for Food Storing. I have to agree with James adap2k - The 72 Hour Kit. at least you get veggies &
Fruit. I can certainly store that!!

Most food at the grocery store is going to be Chinese imports. What happenned to me, but will look at the label next time, was that my girlfriend bought 2 containers of Peaches, but these Peaches were not from the state of GA, they were from China. What is this country going to??

Howdy - hi everyone :)

MGM just mentioned how the "Urgency Factor" is now becoming more obvious and awareness of it, is increasing faster and more often in people at large. Which, I'm not sure if that's Good or Bad... visions of geese in a Hail Storm seem to come to mind...

One thing for certain though, for the folks in Arizona, T S I F...

Citizen's group taking border battle into own hands in Arizona (Nationalist Socialist Movement)

Quote

PINAL COUNTY, AZ - This weekend, JT Ready and a group of armed men plan to take Arizona's border battle into their own hands.

"This is the Minutemen project on steroids," he said.

Ready is a member of the Nationalist Socialist Movement, and he and his citizen's militia group are tired of waiting.

"We're going to go all night and shut down the drug corridor that comes directly into Phoenix," Ready said. "We have guys that are going to be doing some covert stuff and we have some snipers coming out."

Though some people call what this group is doing extreme, they are far from alone.

As Arizona continues to be at the epicenter of the U.S. immigration debate, state law enforcement agencies and other departments are seeing a growing trend of people asking to help secure the border.

"With calling and writing emails, probably 100 plus a day," said Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu.

Babeu's county is one of the nation's worst for drug trafficking and human smuggling.

And Patrick Bray with the Arizona Cattlemen's Association said his office has been receiving a lot of calls as well from people asking to help ranchers patrol their land.

"It's been a pretty big response," he said. "We tell them 'Thanks, but no thanks.' This is something for the federal government."

But that's why Ready said his group feels the need to act.

He said the federal government is not doing enough, and that now is the time to act.

"Defending our nation is dangerous," Ready said. "We have some brave patriots that are willing to put their lives on the line."

But Babeu said he's worried about what could happen.

"There's more to this than just going out there with a gun," he said. "People are getting killed out there, and we have drug cartels at war with each other."
