IRS, FBI and HUD conduct nighttime raid at Cleveland City Hall

Agents from three federal agencies visited Cleveland City Hall Wednesday night as part of a criminal investigation, according to an IRS spokesman.

Agents from the IRS, FBI and Department of Housing and Urban Development were present at the city's Lakeside Avenue offices for "official business," according to IRS spokesman Craig Casserly.

Details of what brought the agents to City Hall after hours were not immediately known, nor was the focus of the agencies' investigation. Casserly said he could not release additional details about the agents' work because court records are sealed.

Federal agents searched the city's Engineering and Construction office in Cleveland City Hall late Wednesday night and seized documents related to company owned by a mid-level manager in the city administration, according to documents released by the city Thursday evening.

Cleveland FBI spokeswoman Vicki Anderson also confirmed in an emailed statement Thursday morning that agents from the three federal agencies were at City Hall "after business hours for authorized law enforcement activity." Like Casserly, she said she could not provide more information because of sealed records.
