Australian Property Dealer McGurk Shot Owed milions Had tape of corrupt politicians

A Sydney businessman shot dead in front of his young son was a heavy cocaine user who dabbled in prostitution and had financial problems, reports claim.

The Sun-Herald reports Mark McGurk was involved in a prostitution ring that supplied girls to high-profile public figures, including sports stars.

The newspaper also details Mr McGurk's million-dollar debts and his heavy alcohol and cocaine use.

Mr McGruk, a 46-year-old property developer, was shot dead outside his home in Cranbrook Avenue, Cremorne, on Sydney's North Shore, about 6.30pm (AEST) on Thursday.

His 9-year-old son was with his father when a gunmen approached him and shot him in the head before fleeing on foot.

Yesterday, it was revealed that Mr McGurk may be linked to an audio tape with information damaging to the NSW state government.

Sydney entrepreneur Jim Byrnes said Mr McGurk, who was a close associate, told him he had a tape recording of a conversation capable of bringing down the NSW government and was concerned for his life.

Sydney Morning Herald journalist Kate McClymont has said Mr McGurk had told her he had audio containing revelations about the bribing of state and federal Labor politicians.

Yesterday Premier Nathan Rees told reporters he only learnt of the corruption tape allegation when his office was contacted on Friday.

"When the media staff said that the (Sydney Morning) Herald had made inquiries," Mr Rees told journalists when asked when he found out it.

He would not say if the state government would conduct its own internal investigation into the supposed tape.

"It's the subject of a police investigation and that's where it should rest," he said.

Mr Rees also said he had no knowledge of any such alleged corrupt behaviour prior to being informed on Friday.

He reiterated his call for anyone with information to contact the police or the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC).

NSW Opposition Leader Barry O'Farrell said ICAC should act immediately following a report Mr McGurk's home and office had been burgled recently.

Mr Byrne says both Mr McGurk's office and home had been burgled, presumably by someone looking for the alleged tape.

"Six weeks ago, his offices were broken into and ransacked and about four weeks ago, his house was broken into and ransacked," he has told the ABC.

"Somebody has been looking for this tape for some period of time and I understand the police were notified in both occasions of the break-ins."

Mr O'Farrell said an investigation was needed urgently.

"There are serious allegations that a tape existed alleging corruption with the Rees government," he told reporters in Sydney on Saturday.

"A man has died and that's why ICAC should get off its backside and investigate this as a matter of urgency.

"ICAC shouldn't wait. It needs to be pro-active ... so that everyone knows exactly what went on.

"Every member of the Rees government will be on the phone to each other saying: `What the hell is this about' and that's more energy that's being wasted and not being put into fixing the state's problems."

NSW Police Minister Tony Kelly said neither he nor his staff had been briefed on the McGurk investigation.

"It would be inappropriate for police to provide briefings on this serious, ongoing criminal investigation," the ABC quoted him as saying.

Labor MPs dismiss fresh AWU claims
http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/breaking-news/labor-mps-dismi...
On Wednesday The Australian newspaper published fresh claims by former union employee Wayne Hem that he deposited $5000 cash into Ms Gillard's bank account at the request of Mr Wilson in July 1995.

Mr Hem recalled Mr Wilson arriving looking scruffy after a night out at a casino and telling him to come to his office.
"I went down and he handed me about five grand," Mr Hem told the newspaper.

"He said 'there's five grand there' and I looked at it and said 'Is this for me?'

"He said 'No, I want you to put it into a bank account.

"Then Bruce handed me a piece of paper with the account number and a name on it, and it was Julia's name. He said 'go put this in Julia's account.'"

Mr Hem said in 1996 he told then AWU joint national secretary Ian Cambridge about his concerns.

Mr Cambridge, now a Fair Work Australia commissioner, made diary entries which reflected Mr Hem's recollection.

A spokeswoman for Ms Gillard said she had "dealt with the matters extensively on the public record and has made clear on numerous occasions that she was not involved in any wrongdoing".

Eric Roozendaal submitted false information to the Roads and Traffic Authority when he was roads minister regarding the Honda CRV at the centre of a corruption probe, an ICAC inquiry has heard.

Moses Obeid, who runs Streetscape Projects, a company that manufactures and sells specially-designed light and flag poles, said he had approached Mr Roozendaal when he was the roads minister after he had been denied a tender being run by the roads authority.

''I wanted him to investigate,'' Moses Obeid said.

''It was like: 'Eric, you run this department and they are a mob of mongrels.'''

On Monday, Moses Obeid initially told the inquiry he didn't know anything about the Circular Quay restaurants.

The ICAC Commissioner, David Ipp, QC, pressed him: ''Do you have an interest in those restaurants?'' Mr Obeid conceded that his family does.

In May, the Herald reported that the family's stake in the cafes was hidden behind a company in the name of Mr Obeid's brother-in-law, John Abood.

But in bank loan documents that were lodged with the NSW Supreme Court, Moses Obeid had sworn he had an interest in ''Circular Quay restaurants'' to the tune of $700,000, bringing his total assets to a value of $11 million.

ICAC to investigate claim that ex-minister took Medich bribe

http://m.smh.com.au/nsw/icac-to-investigate-claim-that-exminister-t...

ICAC will also examine allegations that ''Lucky Gattellari, at the direction of Ronald Medich, arranged and paid for Mr Macdonald to receive services and hotel accommodation as a reward for having arranged the meetings and as an inducement for continuing to show favour to Mr Medich and his business associates''.

Two months after they are alleged to have offered the bribe to Mr Macdonald, in a separate allegation Mr Medich is accused of having paid Mr Gattellari $300,000 to organise the killing of Mr Medich's former business partner Michael McGurk, who was killed outside his Cremorne house in September 2009.

Another man, aged 20, attended Kings Cross Police Station at about 10.30am and is also expected to be charged
The operation follows investigations into the death of Mr McGurk, 45, who was shot outside his home on Cranbrook Avenue in Cremorne, on Sydney's lower north shore, at about 6.30pm on September 3, 2009.

The investigation was spearheaded by detectives from Strike Force Narrunga.
