One of the oldest civic processions in the world annually takes place in the City of London. The Lord Mayor’s Show takes place on the 2nd Saturday in November every year, when the new Lord Mayor of London takes office, and makes a ceremonial journey from the City to Westminster. He or she swears their loyalty to the reigning monarch, and then makes their way back for a banquet at Mansion House.

The procession starts at Guildhall, and consists of hundreds of floats, horses, people, bands and more, all celebrating hundreds of years of London history. At the head of the parade are two wicker giants, representing Gog and Magog, supposed guardians of the City of London. Two smaller versions of Gog and Magog stand permanently on display inside the Guildhall itself (see above picture), but the below ones march to Westminster at the head of the parade.

According to relgious folk; Gog and Magog is the prophesied invader of Israel and the land from which he comes and an evil force opposed to the people of God. Assumed an important place in apocalyptic myths and medieval legend. Known in the Qurʾān as Yājūj and Mājūj.

Gog is identified as the chief prince of the tribes of Meshech and Tubal in the land of Magog, who is called upon by God to conquer the land of Israel.

With a great coalition of forces from throughout the world, Gog and his entire army will invade Israel “like a cloud covering the earth” and will plunder and loot the cities. God, however, will send terrible natural disasters that will destroy Gog and his forces. The defeat of Gog will demonstrate the greatness and holiness of God and restore good relations between God and his people.

Gog has been identified with Gyges, a 7th-century bce king of Lydia, and with the Akkadian god Lady Gaga; and it has also been argued that the name Magog is derived from an Akkadian word meaning “the land of Gyges.” Gyges came to the throne after slaying King Candaules and marrying his queen. Lydia, ancient land of western Anatolia. The Lydians were said to be the originators of gold and silver coins. The Lydians profoundly influenced the Ionian Greeks.

In the 1st century bc the Jewish historian Josephus claimed that Gog and Magog were the Scythians, and in the 5th and 6th centuries they were held to be the Huns. Gog and Magog were equated with the Magyars in the 10th century and with the entire Muslim world, led by Muhammadand Saladin, in the Middle Ages. In both Jewish and Christian apocalyptic writings and other works, they were also identified with the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel.

Scythian nomadic people originally came from Iran and migrated from Central Asia to southern Russia in the 8th and 7th centuries bc. The Scythians founded a rich, powerful empire centred on what is now as Crimea. The migration of the Scythians from Asia eventually brought them into the territory of the Cimmerians, who had traditionally controlled the Caucasus and the plains north of the Black Sea. In a war that lasted 30 years, the Scythians destroyed the Cimmerians and set themselves up as rulers of an empire stretching from west Persia through Syria and Judaea to the borders of Egypt.

The Medes, who ruled Persia, attacked them and drove them out of Anatolia, leaving them finally in control of lands which stretched from the Persian border north through the Kuban and into southern Russia. The Mede are indo-European people, related to the Persians, who entered north eastern Iran in the 17th century bc and settled in the plateau land that came to be known as Media.

The Cimmerian's are ancient people living north of the Caucasus and the Sea of Azov, driven by out of southern Russia, over the Caucasus, and into Anatolia toward the end of the 8th century bc. Scholars believe that the Cimmerians assaulted Urartu (Armenia) about 714 bc, but in 705, after being repulsed by the Assyrian's which is located in what is now northern Iraq and south eastern Turkey.

“Thraco-Cimmerian” remains of the 8th–7th century bc found in the south western Ukraine and in central Europe; may perhaps be looked upon as traces of the western branch of the Cimmerians, who, under fresh Scythian pressure eventually invaded the Hungarian plain and survived there until about 500 bc.

Revelation to John (20:7–10), Gog and Magog are applied to the evil forces that will join with Satan. After Satan has been bound and chained for 1,000 years, he will be released and will rise up against God; he will go forth and deceive the nations of the world—Gog and Magog—gathering them together in great numbers to attack the saints and Jerusalem, the city God loves. God will send fire from heaven to destroy them and will then preside over the Last Judgement.

One of the most important legends associated with Gog and Magog was that of Alexander’s Gate, said to have been built by Alexander the Great to imprison these uncivilised and barbaric people until the end of time. This gate is situated in Georgia, near the Russian border in the Caucasus mountains. Georgian kings were mentioned as guards of the Gog and Magog gate in various historical sources, both antique and Medieval. Jordanes, a Goth himself, identified Magog as one of the ancestors of the Goths in his book Getica. The Goths, according to Isidore of Seville, were thought to be descended from Gog and Magog, and of the same race as the Getae. The Getae or Gets are names given to several Thracian tribes inhabiting the regions to either side of the Lower Danube, in what is today northern Bulgaria and southern Romania.

Some early Christian writers (e.g. Eusebius) identified Gog and Magog with the Romans. After the Roman Empire became Christian, this was no longer possible, and attention switched to Rome's northern barbarian enemies.

Ambrose (d.397) identified them with the Goths, and Isidore of Seville confirmed that people in his day supposed that the Goths were descended from Magog "because of the similarity of the last syllable".

The idea that Gog and Magog were connected with the Goths was long standing; in the mid-16th century, Archbishop of Uppsala Johannes Magnus traced the royal family of Sweden back to Magog son of Japheth, (Magnus identified two of Magog's sons as Suenno, progenitor of the Swedes, and Gethar (also known as Gog or Gogus), ancestor of the Goths).

In the 6th century, the Byzantine historian Procopius f Caesarea (d. after 562) saw Attila and the Huns as the nation locked out by Alexander, and a little later, other Christian writers identified them with the Saracens.

Still later, Gog and Magog became identified with the Khazars, whose empire dominated Central Asia in the 9th and 10th centuries. In his 9th-century work Expositio in Matthaeum Evangelistam, the Benedictine monk Christian of Stavelot referred to them as descendants of Gog and Magog, and says they are "Circumcised and observing all [the laws of] Judaism"; the 14th-century Sunni scholar Ibn Kathir also identified Gog and Magog with the Khazars,as did a Georgian tradition, which called them "wild men with hideous faces and the manners of wild beasts, eaters of blood". According to the famous Khazar Correspondence (c. 960), King Joseph of Khazaria claimed to be a descendant of Magog's nephew Togarmah.

The Mongols were the next barbarians. Early in the 13th century reports began to reach Europe of a mysterious and invincible horde from the east that destroyed Muslim empires and kingdoms, leading kings and popes to take them for Prester John, marching to save Christians from the Saracens; but when they entered Poland and Hungary and annihilated Christian armies, a terrified Europe concluded that they were "Magogoli", the offspring of Gog and Magog, released from the prison Alexander had constructed for them and heralding Armageddon.

In medieval legends of Antichrist and the Last Emperor, Gog and Magog were allied with the armies of Satan. And in various prophetic texts, Gog and Magog participated in the persecutions led by Antichrist, preceded Antichrist as a sign of his coming, or emerged following the defeat of Antichrist in the struggle prior to the Last Judgement. According to Joachim of Fiore, a Calabrian abbot and theologian, Gog is the “Final Antichrist.” In Joachim’s view, Gog will come just before the Last Judgement but only after the defeat of an earlier Antichrist and a period of millennial peace.

And whilst on the Gog a Magog subject, and what wasn‘t widely reported enough, it‘s both hilarious and quite disturbing to confirm the world in being run by complete and utter lunatics, as Andrew Brown of The Guardian newspaper wrote about this in his blog on the 10th August 2009, about the time when Jacques Chirac recounts the time that George W. Bush [it‘s alleged his Skull & Bone club name is Gog, whilst his father‘s is Magog], appealed to their ―common faith‖ [Christianity] and told him: ― Gog and Magog are at work in the Middle East.... The biblical prophecies are being fulfilled.... This confrontation is willed by God, who wants to use this conflict to erase his people‘s enemies before a New Age begins. This bizarre episode occurred while the White House was assembling its-coalition of the willing to unleash the Iraq invasion.

Chirac says he was boggled by Bush‘s call and ―wondered how someone could be so superficial and fanatical in their beliefs. After the 2003 call, the puzzled French leader didn‘t comply with Bush‘s request. Instead Professor Thomas Römer, an Old Testament expert at the University of Lausanne, was rung up by the Protestant Federation of France, and was asked to supply them with a summary of the legends surrounding Gog and Magog and as the conversation progressed, he realised that this had originally come, from the highest reaches of the French government. President Jacques Chirac wanted to know what on earth President Bush had been going on about in their last conversation.   

Bush had then said that when he looked at the Middle East, he saw ―Gog and Magog at work and the biblical prophecies unfolding. But who the hell were Gog and Magog? Neither Chirac nor his office had any idea. In 2007, Professor Romer recounted Bush‘s strange behaviour in Lausanne University‘s review, and it was repeated independently in a French book of interviews with Chirac in spring 2009.[4]
