I am updating this post to include the definition of liberal, it's kind of funny because I wrote this before I even looked the word up based on my feeling that our Constitution and the New Testament were liberating documents that define freedom in my experience.

Then Gary pointed out some historical facts about the Constitution that I had forgotten. I still stand with the Constitution because it is better than the alternatives.

Ahh; thanks! I wasn't aware of the background of the term!

Just a thought, but technically, you seem to be a Libertarian as "Liberal" usually tends to imply the desire to control guns, have big government provide programs for the populace, take from the rich and give to the poor, and more often than not implies being part of the "Left" Democratic party, whereas a Libertarian is exactly what you described above. Perhaps this is a new definition for Liberal as Ron Paul tried to change the definition of Conservative into something more Constitutional/Libertarian?

Yes I knew it was a fight. WE have the Constitution now and I know some people want to scrap that and start over but...

I am of the opinion that we would screw it up worse if we tried to rid of the Constitution because of so many ignorant asleep people that now reside in the states. I doubt we would have the Bill of Rights any longer (I know they are severly eroded now but at least we still have them as law) I would be especially wary of loosing what we have left of those critical freedoms.

No matter what we think now of Washington, Jefferson and the rest I don't see anyone now that has the statesmanship or knowledge of where our rights come from standing up and offering a better document. Our morals and values have devolved too much for me to have much hope in even close. More likely it would be a laundry list of entitlements and faci-socialist control freak insanity. And I am an optimist.

I am 1/2 way through the Federalist Papers and 3/4 throught The Creature From Jekyll Island so when I am done with those I will continue my history lessons.

Gary, great article, I am convicted, and ignorant of something that you can probably clear up . Did the Articles of Confederation expire with the ratification of the Constitution? Where are they in the scheme of things now. Just a wonderful historical footnote, or, actually still a legally binding document? Probably and irrelevant question since apparently the Constitution is no longer a legally binding document.

Feel free to spread/use my blog post it is not copywrited.

Wilson I should have said the Consittution is the greatest HUMAN written liberal document. My intention is NOT to put it in the same class as the Word of God but to give it the rightful position it deserves.

Excellent, Fireguy ! Yep, I guess I am a liberal, too. I know that I am not a conservative as I am an active member of WE ARE CHANGE COLORADO SPRINGS and we strongly desire CHANGE - not the OBAMA MARXIST CHANGE, not the PALIN ASHKENAZI ZIONIST/JEWISH COMMUNO-FASCIST CHANGE, but the CHANGE BACK TO THE CONSTITUTION ! I do not advocate Idolatry to the Constitution, but until YahShua returns and establishes The Torah and Yahweh's government on earth, the Constitution will have to do for now.

So many of our words have been co-opted by the establishment elite, as have been Liberal or Gay. To the point where people do not know the meaning or are afraid to use them in a sentence for fear of being misunderstood.

My feeling is that the United States Constitution and the New Testament are the two most liberal documents in history.
