Police in Georgia handcuffed a kindergartner after the girl threw a tantrum

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. (AP) — Police in Georgia handcuffed a kindergartner after the girl threw a tantrum and the police chief defended the action.

The girl's family demanded Tuesday that this central Georgia city change policy so that other children aren't treated the same way. They say the child was shaken up by being put in a cell at the police station.

Salecia Johnson, 6, was accused of tearing items off the walls and throwing furniture in an outburst Friday at Creekside Elementary School, Macon television station WMAZ-TV (http://on.wmaz.com/HPb7nr ) reported. Police said the girl knocked over a shelf that injured the principal.

The school called police. The police report says when an officer tried to calm the child in the principal's office, she resisted and was handcuffed. The girl was charged with simple assault and damage to property.

Police Chief Dray Swicord says the department's policy is to handcuff people in certain situations.

You both make excellent points. My daughter just reminded me that here in California the teachers don't even get involved. It's up to the teacher's aid who can take an unruly child to sit with her, take the child outside to calm down or, if these measures don't work, then take the child to the principals office. The teachers are paid to teach, they are not paid to discipline nor do they have the training or authority to do so.  The principal, vice-principal and special education teachers are trained and paid more to handle these problems. We are certainly seeing a lot more of the police being called to schools these days. Is it a failure of the school system or is it a failure of the parents and the breakdown of the family? In this case, I think the principal was justified. It's normal for a 2 yr old to have a temper tantrum but it's NOT normal for a 6 yr old to have one and is an indication of deeper problems. If she was strong enough to pull book shelves off the walls, then she was strong enough to hurt someone. How the police handled it from there is another story altogether. Who knows, it sounds harsh but maybe they handcuffed and charged her to force the parents to do something about her problems.

@Gilbert, yes people who work in camps and other children's activities have more leeway than the schools do without a doubt. However, in each of the activities my daughter was involved in, there were children who were so disruptive that the parents were told not to bring their kids back. I paid to enroll my child in these activities and I damn sure wasn't going to have some ADHD brat ruin it for her and the other parents felt exactly the same way. Those running these programs knew it was better to kick out one unruly kid than to have 5 or 6 leave because of that one kid. From what I observed, these parents were trying everything to mainstream and socialize their kids. They were hoping beyond hope that the kid would get interested in some activity and it would calm them down. But of course it never did. What I also observed is that these same parents could not follow instructions any more than their kids could. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

I see the problem as being brainwashing from the top all the way down to the Police. What the real situation is I believe without a doubt is that our Govenment is run by ruthless, anti- constitution, anti-American Zionist nuts. And the new Police are being conditioned to believe Americans are the new terrorists. It is where we are in a Police state with the new Gestapo and people had better walk carefully with all the new Draconian laws being passed by the White House Gangster Elite. Our country has been hyjacked by/and through the Zionist occupational Forces. Welcome the NWO the platform of Illuminati evil.

@gilbertpaul martin:

You sound now like a very humane ex-law enforcement officer.

You must be horrified by the abominable actions of so many police these days.

I'm afraid it is not just a lack of training of the police; it's the wrong kind of training.

Some of the best-trained police and military in the School of the Americas became the elite death-squad leaders and torturers in South and Central America, just as was the plan.

Today's police are taught to obey orders, and ignore the Bill of Rights and Constitution, it seems to me.

The government know what they are doing, and it spells big trouble for the ordinary folk.

Off course somethings wrong but I agree that the parents shoulder some blame. You will never see things the way they use to be in years past. I don't remember ever seeing any such behavior like this in Catholic school or Public schools. But even though I think it was handled wrong it seems the Police could have driven her home instead of locking her up. At least thats what I think. And as for lawsuits there are times when I believe too many people have used this lawsuit craze wrongly and yes many people just won't get involved as a result of frivolous lawsuits. But I take pride in that I know I would have handled this better. As a former Athletic Director of a camp I was entrusted with 600 kids at one time and about all you can say about my time was that mostly my kids always had fun. I never had a problem child. Little problems stayed that way with me. One problem one night was a boy urinated in his pants at a cabin meeting. All the other boys laughed about this but I quickly stifled the problem by getting the kid to the bathroom and letting him know theres nothing wrong with him. And as for the others who laughed I gently scolded them and urged them to keep it to themselves and they did. One time I was scolding a little boy and he started crying. I didn't know kids were that sensitive so I shut up and hugged him. However this was a rare moment because we mostly had a good time. Anyway I hope the little darling wasn't to traumatized. After all shes only 6.

@Nikki:

The Grandmother and Judge are relevant insofar as they show that the 'Justice System' of the US is anything but just. Before you call in the cops over a six-year old throwing tantrums in school, think twice, then think again.

I know how disruptive and aggressive some kids can be; I am a cab driver and I pick up kids sent to special schools (with an escort) to take them to and from these schools.

The police are frequently called to at least one of these schools, but these are for older kids (probably nine to about fourteen), and I have no problem with that. I have seen kids kicking and punching teachers, breaking school windows, and I believe these kids should be dealt with by a harsher regime.

Some of them are autistic, but they can still cause damage to teachers, other kids, themselves, and property.

I do not blame any mother for not wanting her child to be in a class with such aggressive, or even disruptive, kids. But six is a bit young to be put in handcuffs, and charged.

What I am really trying to put across is the abominable state of 'Justice' in the States, whether it's the police, the DA, the Judges or even the SCOTUS.

And the 'Shadow Government' (the 'Banksters' and other 'elite' who hold the reigns of power behind the scenes, who choose the people to be 'elected' by fraudulent elections (re elections, SCOTUS and Diebold spring to mind, re 'W' 'elections') have much worse in store for all of us.

I agree it is a bit off subject, but it all fits together with junk foods giving kids and others behavioural problems, Big Pharma pushing Retalin and so forth, video 'games' pushing violence, illegal drugs supplied to the country by the CIA (one of the biggest drug smuggling organisations in the world - check out 'Cocaine Politics' by Peter Dale Scott, or google 'Meet Me At Mena' + full length video).

@Gilbert, unfortunately that's true but it's from decades of lawsuits. If you have a class of 20 students and 19 are well behaved and one constantly disrupts the class, that's not fair and soon the parents of the 19 will start to complain. If the teacher hadn't removed this girl immediately and one of the other students had been injured, then what?  Nuns do not have a right to beat kids and public school principals do not have the right to paddle kids, thus the lawsuits.  It's up to the parents to discipline their kids but when they can't or won't, the schools do have the right and obligation to either expel them or put them in special needs classes.

@Paul, I'm not favoring harsh treatment at all. Most public school districts have excellent special needs programs with a staff of specially trained teachers as well as psychologists, nutritionists, etc. If a child is 6 and still having temper tantrums, something is wrong. What I would like to see happen is for this child to be evaluated and given the help she and her family needs (and keep her away from my kids while doing it).

As for the nuns and their rulers, I know for a fact that they picked on certain kids they didn't like for whatever reason. And I know that some of my former classmates are still suffering trauma from the abuse they suffered at the hands of these sadistic women. Any teacher that abuses a child should go to jail, nun or not. I'm not sure how the grandmother and judge are relevant to this discussion.

Perhaps some of you favouring 'harsh treatment' should watch and read this short video clip, and associated report:

'Disabled boy held down and tortured by laughing teachers:

http://www.brasschecktv.com/videos/schools-are-prisons-1/disabled-b...

or, at the other end of the age scale:

 Grandmother tortured for buying Sudafed decongestant. The whole Justice system, from DA, Judge and cops are some sick puppies in Alabama (and elsewhere!). Unfortunately, it's not the odd 'bad apple'; it's more like an occasional good apple, once in a blue moon:

Then of course there is the Judge who is serving time (I'm sure he'll get out early on some pretext) for selling kids to detention centers:

Sounds like a dam if you do dam if you won't. Thats too bad.

@Gilbert, if you were teaching in a private or parochial school they might allow you to handle it your way up to a point...a very small point. But in public schools the teachers must follow the protocol.  In either situation, me and about a dozen other moms would be demanding your removal the moment we found out our kids had to witness this child have a tantrum because she wasn't removed from the class immediately. In private schools you threaten to take your kid out of the school and since they are a business, they don't want that. And in public schools you threaten to sue them and/or take it to the media.

Comment by gilbertpaul martin on April 18, 2012 at 1:08pm

Thats true but as I said I would have handled it differently but I understand how it got to that point. In my day as I said before the Nuns would have let her have it with the ruler and that would have been the end of it. If it was my daughter she would have got a little more then a scolding from me. My kids when they would act up all I had to do was glare at them and they would stop in their tracks. My children know I don't play around. But my wife was so passive that she would tell them 10 or more times and the kids still wouldn't listen. The eyes is quicker then the hand.
