Partial and incinerated remains of some September 11 victims that could not be identified were sent to a landfill, the Pentagon admitted today.
The number of victims involved is unclear, but a Pentagon report reveals that some of the unidentifiable bodyparts belonged to those killed when a terrorist-hijacked airplane struck the Pentagon, killing 184 people, and another crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, killing 40, in the 2001 attacks.
The report was by an independent committee that had been asked to examine practices at the military's mortuary at Dover, Delaware, which is the first stopping point for fallen troops coming home from war overseas.
