AMERICAN TV journalist Rachel Maddow has broken down on air in an extraordinary display of emotion after breaking news was delivered over the controversial migrant crisis in the United States.
Trump administration officials have been sending babies and other young children forcibly separated from their parents at the US-Mexico border to at least three “tender age” shelters in South Texas, The Associated Press has learned.
When the news broke on air, a visibly distressed Maddow said “this is incredible” before struggling to announce the news, keeping her head down and pausing, holding her finger in the air at one point and struggling to get the words out.
Lawyers and medical providers who have visited the Rio Grande Valley shelters described play rooms of crying preschool-age children in crisis.
The government also plans to open a fourth shelter to house hundreds of young migrant children in Houston, where city leaders denounced the move Tuesday.
Maddow was so visibly distressed she asks on air if they can cut the piece, but she is forced to continue before breaking down and telling her audience, “I think I’m going to have to hand this off” to another program.
“That’s it for us tonight,” she said through choked words.
