Thirty-seven Ohio state troopers have been dispatched to help North Dakota authorities deal with an ongoing protest over the construction of an oil pipeline near a Native American reservation.
The Ohio troopers left Saturday after assistance was requested by North Dakota officials, said Lt. Robert Sellers of the State Highway Patrol.
Ohio will be reimbursed for the troopers’ expenses and their absence will leave no shifts uncovered on Ohio’s roads, Sellers said.
Tensions are running high as protesters seek to halt the construction of the Dakota Access pipeline to carry crude oil to terminals in Illinois.
Native Americans and environmentalists contend the pipeline will threaten water supplies and harm sacred tribal land and burial grounds near the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation.
Not all were pleased with the decision to send Ohio troopers to North Dakota. An online petition asking Gov. John Kasich to recall the troopers had received the support of nearly 11,000 people at mid-afternoon.
