General Strike: Occupy protesters shut down Port of Oakland

Over 10,000 Occupy Wall Street protesters have shut down the port of Oakland in California. It follows a violent police crackdown there when police stormed the demonstrators' staging ground last week. A former US Marine suffered a fractured skull when he was hit by a projectile when police tried to clear a protest camp in central Oakland.

BREAKING: Oakland General Strike Paralyzes City, Port

Huge crowds gathering and marching in solidarity with Occupy Oakland's branch of the Occupy Worldwide Movement have shut down the port of Oakland as of 5:30:pm:pdt. Crowds and marchers gathered as the day progressed and are mounting and surging at this hour.
Oakland city officials including Mayor Jean Quan and Oakland Police Chief Howard Jordan are addressing the local television media, speaking in conciliatory terms and appealing for calm.
Chanting "Our streets! Our port! Power to the people!" crowds are swirling through the port area and are scattered through the streets of downtown Oakland all the way back to the city's civic center where the controversy began nearly a week ago with a police raid on the Occupy Oakland encampment at Frank Ogawa Plaza.

Police estimated that a crowd of about 3-thousand had gathered at the port at the height of the demonstration.

Gates Closed! RT inside Occupy Oakland General Strike

In the U.S., all eyes are on Oakland now, where a rally of thousands of anti-corporate protesters paralyzed one of America's major sea ports. That follows last week's violent dispersal of a demonstrators' camp by Police that saw a former US Marine being severely injured. Our correspondent, Lucy Kafanov, has been at the centre of it all in the protest-locked port, she sent this report from Oakland..
