"He did have a secret clearance. And he did have a CAC (common access card)," said Thomas Hoshko, CEO of The Experts Inc, which was helping service the Navy Marine Corps Intranet as a subcontractor for HP Enterprise Services, part of Hewlett-Packard Co.

Alexis had previously worked for The Experts in Japan from September 2012 to January 2013, he said.

(CNN) — Washington police are confident that only one person was involved in Monday morning’s shooting at the Washington Navy Yard, and they are lifting a shelter-in-place order for residents who live nearby, Police Chief Cathy Lanier said Monday night. Authorities have said suspect Aaron Alexis, 34, was killed after an encounter with security.

Authorities also identified seven of the 12 shooting victims killed. They are: Michael Arnold, 59. Sylvia Frasier, 53. Kathy Gaarde, 62. John Roger Johnson, 73. Frank Kohler, 50. Kenneth Bernard Proctor, 46. Vishnu Pandit, 61. All of the victims killed are described as civilians or contractors; none of the victims killed were military personnel, authorities said.

  1. Navy veteran Aaron Alexis, who killed 12 people at a Navy building in Washington Monday morning, had been suffering a host of serious mental issues, including paranoia and a sleep disorder, law enforcement officials told the Associated Press.

Alexis had been hearing voices in his head and had been treated since August by the Veterans Administration for his mental problems, the officials said. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the criminal investigation in the case was continuing.

Alexis, 34, was discharged from the Navy two years ago after serving hitches in Texas and Illinois.
