Farm turns dairy cattle poop into fuel
What do cows make besides milk? Yep, manure — and lots of it.
For years environmentalists have warned that all that poop is a serious problem for the air and water. Well fear not, because now there's an industrial-sized dairy farm in Indiana where 30,000 cows are doing dairy duty while keeping the lights on too.
Fair Oaks Farms takes the methane from five million pounds of cattle droppings and converts it into natural gas, which makes enough power to run 42 tractor-trailers, 10 barns and a whole lot else.
The U.S. Department of Energy says the farm is taking two million gallons of diesel off American highways each year. That's a saving that passes the sniff test. [Source]
