Why did Lincoln use "4 score and 7 years ago"? Over 10,000 books on Lincoln have failed to explain it! It's because it refers back to 7/4: July 4th, 1776. But it's also a reference to Genesis 16:16, "Abram was 4 score and 6 years old when Hagar the slave bore Ishmael (Is he male?) to Abram." in Gen 17:4-5, GOD tells Abram, "My covenant is with you...thy name shall be Abraham: for a father of many nations have I made you". Lincoln was known as "Father Abraham" to his supporters - there was even a popular song by Stephen Foster entitled: We Are Coming Father Abraham 300,000 Strong. Lincoln the master politician subtly began his Gettysburg Address with a reference to him being Father Abraham.
