"The universe—which stands continually open to our gaze, but it cannot be understood unless one first learns to comprehend the language and interpret the characters in which it is written. It is written in the language of mathematics, and its characters are triangles, circles, and other geometrical figures, without which it is humanly impossible to understand a single word of it; without these, one is wandering around in a dark labyrinth." - Galileo Galilei
Galileo is considered to be the first modern scientist. He was a devout Christian - a Roman Catholic - and if it had not been for his long-time relationship with the pope, he would have been executed by the Vatican for heresy. Instead, he had to grovel on his knees to the pope so as to be sentenced to house arrest for the rest of his life for his "crimes". He was also not allowed a burial worthy of his accomplishments and status.
It took 350 years for the Vatican to admit they were wrong about Galileo's discoveries and wrong about the way they treated him. 350 years! It was only 295 years between Jesus' crucifixion (30 AD) and the Council of Nicea (325 AD).
