“Childs Play” was a sprawling, underground child exploitation website — the largest on the internet. It was a platform that connected thousands of abusers and pedophiles around the world.

And until September, the website was run for months by Australian police.

Police secretly took control of the gigantic global forum in October 2016, according to Norwegian newspaper VG, and ran it for 11 months, shutting it down one month ago. They gained control of the forum after the site’s founder was arrested in northern Virginia and an international law enforcement team saw a unique opportunity: If they took over the site, they could monitor members, track down perpetrators and rescue victims.

“Once you’ve got control of the site, you can do whatever you want,” Queensland police officer Paul Griffiths, who helped lead the investigation, told VG.
