That would be the Ning chat I believe, go to the chat interface on the home page and mute the notification sound by clicking on the little speaker icon in the lower left. If you are not on the home page you will have to expand the interface out from the chat bar at the bottom of your browser window by clicking on the icon in the right side of the bar that looks kind of like a see-saw (triangle with a line above it), then click the same speaker icon as described previously.

 

The Chatango chat interface that is in the right hand sidebar will make a noise with each message post as well unless you turn it off in similar fashion - speaker icon at bottom left. Chatango will remember your preference if you tell it to, the Ning chat interface will not so you may want to turn it off whenever you log in to 12160.

It took me over a month to figure out what the hell that sound was Jim!  I feel your pain!!  That is the first thing I do when I get on this site, is "go offline" of the chat so I don't have to hear every "ba-doop" when someone makes a comment thru chat.
