Egypt’s interim government has declared the Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist group, accusing them of carrying out a suicide bomb attack on a Sinai police station that killed 16 people.
Now the authorities will have the power to charge any MB member with membership of a terrorist organization.
The Islamist group has already been outlawed despite the fact that its candidate, Mohamed Morsi, won Egypt’s first democratic election last year before being ousted from office in July.
In September, an Egyptian court banned the Brotherhood because of its connections to radical Islam and its ability to command a large number of well-organized supporters, which made it a direct threat to the government.
Thousands of Morsi supporters have already been arrested in a crackdown by the police and the army.
Morsi himself remains in custody, where he is awaiting trial on numerous charges including espionage and murder.
