At least one person has been shot to death on the campus of Purdue University in the US state of Indiana, authorities said.
The campus was locked down on Tuesday following the shooting which occurred about noon near the electrical engineering building.
The lockdown was lifted when a male gunman was taken into custody. However, the electrical engineering building remained closed.
The suspect seemed to have had the victim as his only target and left the building after the shooting, said Purdue University Police Chief John Cox.
"This individual seemed to have had intentions for the decedent," he said.
The suspect surrendered to a police officer outside the building, the police chief told reporters.
The police, however, did not identify either the victim or the shooter.
The frequency of shootings at schools and universities in the United States is fueling the national debate over gun control.
Last week, two students were shot at a high school in Philadelphia, another was shot at a high school in Albany, New York, and two students were shot at a middle school in New Mexico, according to Reuters.
According to an investigation by the Daily Beast, one school shooting has taken place in America every two weeks on average.
Many critics blame the country’s notoriously liberal gun control laws for the high rate of gun violence.
