FBI Director James Comey planned to go public with information that Russia was actively meddling in the US election months before Americans went to the polls, but was stopped by top Obama officials, reports Newsweek.

The Department of Homeland Security publicly acknowledged an investigation in to possible Russian meddling in the US general election on October 7. 

Months before in June or July, James Comey approached the Obama administration with an idea to write an op-ed article in a national newspaper revealing the foreign intrusion, but was blocked by top Obama officials.

“He had a draft of it or an outline. He held up a piece of paper in a meeting and said, ‘I want to go forward. What do people think of this?’” says an administration insider. 

The meetings were attended by Secretary of State John Kerry, Attorney General Loretta Lynch, National Security Adviser Susan Rice, and head of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson.

Obama officials eventually decided against the op-ed. According to the insider, the article would solely focus on Russian meddling, and would not mention any investigation as to whether Trump campaign officials were colluding with the Kremlin.

“The White House shut it down,” a source told Newsweek. “They did their usual—nothing.”

The revelation raises serious questions as to when the Obama White House was notified of Russian interference in the presidential race, and why they chose to hide that information from the public
