The Sacramento City Council voted Tuesday night to use the grant of $614,964 to pay for 32 surveillance cameras in the city.
The money comes from a grant the federal government awarded the city in April.
The approval to use the money for the cameras comes despite the objections of the American Civil Liberties Union.
A Sacramento official for the union had written to Mayor Kevin Johnson opposing the cameras, claiming that they would lead to racial profiling.
In supporting the vote for the surveillance cameras, Johnson said they should help reduce crime.
