The fine points of “smart” meter technologies.

By Ken H.

The Energy Policy Act of 2005, section 1252, allows opting-IN to a “smart” system by customer request. The utilities however, and under an assumed color of right, are forcing this “smart” pill down our throats while trying to charge us if we spit it out, and the CPUC- against its own Code, State and Federal Law- is supporting them.

Energy savings and securing our infrastructure are not the goals here, it is the gathering of your personal information, controlling your energy usage and making money.     The World Bank reported in 2010 that US per capita electrical usage is below 2000 levels.

The “smart” system destroys your constitutional protection from unreasonable search and seizure while documenting your private habits within your home. California Constitution Article 1, Sections 1 and 13, U.S. Constitution Amendments 4, 9 and 14.  No group has the right to your personal information.

Extortion is defined as “the acquiring of anything through the use of force or threats”. California Penal Code sections 518 & 519 and the United States Code section 1951.  “Your info or your money.”

“Smart’ technologies do not strengthen the infrastructure of our nation, they merely allow the fine manipulation of utility usage within the aging system. Fact: microelectronic systems are more sensitive to natural and manmade damage or manipulation that could cripple our way of life, than electromechanical (analog) systems.

The “smart” meter grid will also introduce an unregulated electromagnetic radiation source to our lives that is far greater than current cell phone or other wireless usage. Seeming lack of definitive evidence of harm from this radiation IS NOT proof of safety.     Consider the history of DDT.

The Public Utilities Code section 745(d) states, in part, “On and after January 1, 2014, the commission shall only approve an electrical corporation’s use of default time-variant pricing in a manner consistent with the other provisions of this part, if all of the following conditions have been met:

(1) Residential customers have the option to not receive service pursuant to time-variant pricing and incur no additional charges as a result of the exercise of that option….”

“Service pursuant to…” is having a “smart” meter capable of supplying the information to run the “smart” system.

You have the rights and voice to deny extortionate demands and protect your privacy, health and finances.

Pay your bill, pay no extortion, defend your rights.

Say NO to “smart” meters every way you can.

I agree, the thing that I hate the most about the SmartMeters is the time differentiated pricing schemes set to be tested in a year or two. This program is to be an experiment, last for two years and be evaluated to show if it really does help shift electrical usage to off peak hours and save customers money. If this plan fails, it will have to be scrapped by law. That is the only privacy issue with the SmartMeter program. As for all this other propaganda about surveillance of personal activities, that is pure bunk.
The whole SmartMeter program was created to automate meter reading and increase revenue with these time differentiated pricing schemes.
One the first count, the program is a complete failure because the telemetry chosen (Silver Springs radio smart grid) does not support the measuring of the bi-directional flow of current. Hence, meter readers are still needed to read the customers who are on the advanced technology theories about de-centralized generation (DG).
This multi-national centralized generation of electrical power in the world might come to an end.
The corporations have set this up to make huge profits, but this is not the best way to handle the future needs of customers and the environment.
In centralized generation, there is also a huge amount of waste. Long transmission lines have large amounts of voltage drop, cause fires, wreck the environment and are prone to problems.
This corporate way needs to be scrutinized and scrapped. What we all really need is to think outside of the corporate box and expand our efforts to create more micro power grids and utilize solar, wind, geothermal and other sources on a more local level. This is called decentralized or distributed generation (DG).
There are many people in this country that believe that the corporate way is the only way, but they are brainwashed.
There are strong movements starting up to challenge the status quo about electrical power all over the world. In Marin, there is the Solar Times http://www.solartimes.org
    Check it out.

  2. John Malthouse says:

I agree with the majority this commentary, re: safety, grid upgrading and thinking outside the current corporate box. The consumer should be looking to becoming independant of the grid and the current reshaping of corporate takeover of it. Well done!

With respect to the data collection and associated privacy concerns, I cannot agree that it is “pure bunk”. It is not. The personal electronic data being collected and the consumer concerns around are very valid. If the smart meter roll-out is world wide, and it is, can you imagine how this personal info could be used in countries that do not tolerate oppositional views or opinions by its citizens?

Considering the errosion of democracy and increasing invasive manner of security in North America, I am very concerned with the trend and the smart meter is the ultimate device for closer scrutiny. It is Orwellian!

As usual the federal government puts the cart in front of the horse. The oboma administration is only interested in pissing away money so as to remake amerika but that's for another conversation.
Simply said America doesn't have a grid system compatible with wind & solar as of yet.Smart meters will be part of it but not any time soon.
Smart Grid: The future of energy
The Smart Grid is coming. It is needed in order to raise or lower prices for consumers depending on the time of day. It is needed to control consumer loads to better integrate intermittent alternative energy into the grid (industrial loads are already demand controlled by the grid operator depending on the type of service contract they have). Doing this will make the grid reliable at a reasonable cost even with the addition of solar, wind, and other intermittent sources. And it is required in order to maintain grid reliability as these alternative energy sources become a bigger fraction of grid power.
Grid frequency and power control
The electrical grid without storage is an interesting device. At all times the power delivered has to match the power demanded within a few tenths of a percent in order to keep the grid frequency within tolerance. As currently designed small loads - like households are uncontrolled so grid operators monitor grid frequency in order to determine if the generation capacity matches the load. If the grid frequency is rising there is excess generating capacity and if it is falling there is not enough. So grid frequency wanders a bit during the day as loads and generating capacity are added or subtracted from the grid. Motors have a fairly tight frequency tolerance requirement of plus or minus five percent. At 60 Hertz that is an instantaneous tolerance of plus or minus .15 Hertz. Since there are still clocks (on your microwave for instance) that depend on grid frequency for timing, the grid is adjusted once a day to keep grid timed clocks accurate on a day to day basis.

Smart Grid meters - overview
What about Smart Grid Meters? How can they help? In a number of ways. But there are some requirements they have to meet to do their job. They have to accurately measure power for billing purposes. For home electrical power the unit of measure of power is the kilowatt (kW) and the unit of energy is the kilowatt hour (kWh). The power and energy accuracy is ultimately traceable back to National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The meters have to know what time it is for time of day billing. And because the meters are networked they have to have security to not only prevent physical tampering with the meters but they also have to have data security in order to prevent electronic tampering with their functioning since they are networked.

Simply said America doesn't have a grid system compatible with wind & solar as of yet.

What is the problem about adding more power to the grid?

Grids as they are today depend on constant power. If one were to develop a power system for for ones home it would consist of one or more of these. Wind , solar , generator AND BATTERIES.

Wind & solar are intermittent and have to be stored.

America's existing system doesn't have the ability to store energy to be used as needed.

The diagram is a good illustration for an outside grid farmhouse. They will even need batteries.

When windpower is added to the grid family homes do not have to know about it - it does not matter to them.

(I remember one street where there was rows of solar powered lights on each side, on a grid based lights in the middle. 9 og 10 of those solar powered lights were gone, and the remaining ones did not deliver any usable light - they must have been installed with their own batteries and all was gone, and no money for replacement?)

One solar panel on each lamp, 1/2 a square meter, with charger and battery ... costing? (some have made money here)

(Of course the energy delivered from batteries will be a fraction of the energy from the solar panels itself, that is a fraction of energy in sun)

There is no economy in that kind of "green power". And there is no economy in using windpower for heating)

Two phrases that have become common place are "smart grid" and "microgrid" -- and the key to both is storage. Smart grid is all about improving the efficiency of the generation, distribution and use of energy, while microgrid is the creation of off-grid generation and distribution of energy using renewable sources such as wind and solar. Neither is efficient unless you have the ability to store the excess electricity being generated so that it can be used later, when it is needed.

The grid does not use batteries. Windpower is never stored when connected to the grid. There is no need for the grid to store electricy.

Smart grid is all about improving the efficiency of the generation, distribution and use of energy

To turn off electricy in homes?

If you’re a technical person, you’ll find this interesting. Wind energy advocates, while admitting wind energy is intermittent with wide and often rapid variations, assumed the presence of many turbines in a large scale wind project would average the ups and downs and transform it into smooth power to the grid, unfortunately, a new study just out shows wind power does exactly the opposite of what they believed. The turbulence of the wind and the instability of the energy produced is amplified in large scale projects, decreasing the stability of the electric grid.

Carbo-nazis in action - no economy. But sure it will make people believe "we need green energy" .. otherwise they would not have spent so much money on these mills. Some make money on this, but not the consumers - they have to pay for it.
