Military helicopters to conduct routine training over Twin Cities during evenings this week

MINNEAPOLIS - Authorities say military aircraft will be conducting routine training over the Twin Cities through Saturday.

Minneapolis Police say the U.S. Special Operations Command training actually began last Sunday, but it was in locations not easily seen by or open to the public.

But police say the urban-environment training will become more visible as helicopters support the training this week. Residents may see or hear low-flying, military transport helicopters, specifically Black Hawks and smaller Hughes 500s, flying in the Minneapolis area between 7 p.m. and midnight.

The exact training times and locations are not being released to prevent people from gathering to watch the training and creating a safety hazard.

Police say they're announcing the exercises to alert residents and prevent concerned callers from overloading the 911 system.

Urban defense training happening in downtown Minneapolis. I'm on the 28th floor of the Wells Fargo Building (90 S. 7th St). They are coming from the north east up over the 5th street towers (shorter building is the north tower). There were three helicopters that came in single file, climbed to a hover over the building, held it for about 10 seconds apiece and then took off down Marquette Ave. They did this twice, and then cam back at dusk for a second set. Same procedure. There were also 4 MH-60 Little Birds doing the same thing. Very cool.
