PESHAWAR, Pakistan (TheBlaze/AP) — A former Pakistani legislator has offered a $200,000 bounty for anyone who kills the maker of an anti-Islam film that has angered Muslims around the world.
Ikramullah Shahid made the offer at a rally Monday in the northwestern city of Peshawar, before a crowd of about 15,000 people.
The rally was led by the Difa-e-Pakistan Council, an umbrella group of radical Islamic and militant groups. Shahid is a member of the group.
This is the second such offer made by someone in Pakistan. A federal cabinet minister earlier offered $100,000 for the man behind the U.S.-made film that portrays Islam’s Prophet Muhammad as a fraud, womanizer and child molester.
Outraged Muslims have rallied against the film. At least 23 people have died in protests in Pakistan against the film.
But while many have blame the film for Middle East unrest, Libya’s president has said unequivocally that the movie was not behind the attacks on U.S. officials in his country that were at the forefront of the violence. Obama administration officials have also came under fire last week after outlets reported that officials declared the action a terrorist attack internally within 24 hours but continued to blame the film publicly.
Some have even called on Ambassador Susan Rice to resign, as she was the leading official advancing the narrative that the film was to blame.
The 55-year-old Califronia man behind the film, Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, is currently in custody after a judge determined that in making the film he violated his parole. He was convicted of federal check fraud charges in 2010.
