I can tell you that on the DC march this year we met several Texans on the mall. There was very little hootin' and hollerin' from them. Just pure commitment to the cause. Serious belief with resolve oozing from their veins. Made me proud to stand next to them.

Glad to see there's a viable independence movement in Texas. My wife and I decided that if Texas is the first state to declare sovereignty and independence, then we will leave Arkansas in order to do what we can to bolster the cause. Dan Miller's video was well produced, and spot on.

Everybody has their own SHTF picture. Mine generally has power failure, and no power, no repeater. Repeaters are generally, but not always either 2 meter or 75 centimeter, with a few 6's and 10's around, too, but not many. When it comes to monitoring those, a shortwave would be a submarine screen door. Your idea is right...just the wrong radio. We'll need a VHF/UHF receiver (scanner) for monitoring repeaters. When you get into 10 meters on up, shortwave will shine.

As far as detection on a repeater, it might take a tad longer, but not much. Remember, although the repeater is transmitting at say 146.805, you are still sending out a signal, but 600 lower on 146.205.

I like solar, and yes, there are some fairly inexpensive systems out there. 60 watt kits can be had for around $300. And they have it all; charge controller, inverter, panels. Only need to add your deep cycle battery.

One other thing about repeaters. Although they are mostly there for public use, they are still owned by someone. If they are of a different mindset, it won't be long before that repeater becomes unavailable.

If you decide to get your license, and need help, I can give you a couple good sites that have practice exams. Study. Take the test in your living room until you feel confidant and then take it for real, and in no time you have your Tech license.

David. I would think a repeater would be most appropriate for the SHTF scenario? That way it could be positioned away from your person or living space but still transmit fairly decent power levels without fear of them jumping directly onto your location. Early warning at the repeater could be facilitated through to use of inexpensive Esecurity measures say a mile away from your person. This to give you time to do a Hogans Heros and ditch the low power stuff close to you. All along you could listen with a standard shortwave.

Solar power today is pretty cheap compared to 20 years ago. Maybe my thoughts are bassackwards here?

Yes JED it is an older SSB President Washington unit. It can be partially converted to 10 meter and I've been solicited in the past to do so but resisted. I think it's time to Fleabay her and upgrade to a newer more efficient true 10 meter rig atleast. Accompanied by an operators license of course. I still have my original CB call sign card assigned to me when I was around 9 years old. A cheapo mobile, a Radio Shack Power supply and a window mounted omni hybrid I made myself. The finals didn't like that antenna but I did...heh!

Jonesey, sniffing out transmitters is an activity that some hams do for fun, and I'm sure the FCC is skilled at it. My object is to run on a nominal 12VDC with the lowest wattage I can get away with, and the most unobtrusive antenna I can find that will work well. I now have the ARRL Basic Antenna book and will let you know what I come up with. Likely to be the simplest, like a pure vertical. But it may be that a beam that can be aimed would work best with low power.

I still need to find a switching power supply for my Kenwood HF rig, unless I decide to run it from a car battery. Then all I'll need is a mic and a working 10 meter antenna. For now all I have are 2 meter antennas. I hope to have the Kenwood up and running by the time your antenna is ready.

Germany, in WWII, had their little triangulating trucks wandering around sniffing out transmitters. We must not be deluded into thinking that our Gub won't do the exact same thing in a time they consider us the enemy.

And licensed hams were restricted here in the US during WWII.

It all depends on one's location. A giant antenna is pretty hard to camouflage in a town or city, and living in the woods, I know it's "easy for me to say so," but my goal is as big an antenna as possible and the least amount of power. Remember...those 50 gazillion watt amplifiers suck juice, and in a SHTF situation, a battery and a small generator or solar panel may be all that is available. Also the GazillionAmp will throw out a footprint that will be tracked in a very short order.

As an aside, JED, I'm looking into making a 10 meter beam. Won't be able to afford a giant rotor to turn it, but will make it so a pipe wrench can move it if necessary. Pointing it due south to begin with will work OK for me to try to hit you.
