Excavations of the bodies have been going on for many years, you can find out more from the Easter Island Statue Project.  It’s generally accepted that the statues were made sometime between 1250 and 1500 AD. There is controversy surrounding why the bodies are buried. Was it time and erosion, or were they buried on purpose?  Aliens?   The soil surrounding the bodies for so long has preserved interesting carvings (petroglyphs, or rock markings)..

This one below has a sailing ship carved onto it…

In the 90's, I remember reading a strip called Tales From Beyond Science in the British comic book 2000AD.

TFBS was a sort of Twilight Zone-esque series of short stories, complete with a Rod Serling type narrator.

I remember one issue had a tale called “Agents of Mu-Mu.”, that ended up with the main protagonist going insane after coming accross Moai that excavated themselves, revealing full bodies with arms and legs, which then proceeded to chase him, before we cut to our protagonist, now in the present, drooling in an insane asylum.

All the Tales From Beyond Science stories have been collected in one volume - http://comicattack.net/2011/11/image-tfbsci/

OMG! The mystery deepens. The heads alone are amazing but now they got bodies! Can't wait to see them.

Reminds me of something in the Ancient Aliens group. I'll grab it...

Check the link for more megalithic structures buried in the ground. Certainly another one of the great mysteries of archeology.

Wow!
