I am building a sand bag circular EARTH KIVA in my backyard to go underground for hectic windy times. (I expect this wind cycle we are experiencing to get worse before it gets better!)
The Earth Kiva is going to look like a big 'Hobbit House' - all alternative tech inside with coal/wood stove to heat water pipes & cook on and bake in, central fire pit, 44gallon drum windows and water tanks, pit toilet, domed roof covered by soil on top of construction....

I', not sure where you're at, but what about flooding? Sandbags would keep a minimal amount of water out, but I've been through a few hurricanes with extreme flooding - I don't know how safe I'd feel underground. Sounds like an excellent idea for just wind though! Please keep us updated with any pics/plans, etc!
