Hurricane Katia seen missing U.S. East Coast with 2 possible storms forming behind her

Just as South Florida appears to be safely out of the sights of Hurricane Katia, a new disturbance has formed that could become a tropical depression in the next day or so.


The system became much better organized as of the 2 p.m. update from the National Hurricane Center. Forecasters increased the chances of further development in the next two days from 20 to 60 percent.
Located about 550 miles southwest of the Cape Verde Islands, the system is moving west-northwest at about 15 mph.

(Reuters) - Hurricane Katia powered up to a major Category 3 storm on Monday, but was expected to veer away from the East Coast later this week, avoiding a direct hit on a seaboard already battered by earlier Hurricane Irene.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center warned however that U.S. East Coast beaches should still watch out in the coming week for large swells generated by Katia which could cause life-threatening coastal surf and rip currents.
