“Conservativism values hierarchy and tradition and rejects evidence-based reasoning in favor of arguments from authority. The imaginary god provides the perfect conservative authority; a completely evidence-free, ultimate authority.” ~Amanda Marcotte

“We were brainwashed from birth [in Ireland] to believe men of god were gods, when in fact they were mere boys playing god and controlling people through fear and guilt.”

“I'm not even an atheist so much as I am an antitheist; I not only maintain that all religions are versions of the same untruth, but I hold that the influence of churches, and the effect of religious belief, is positively harmful.”

Christopher Hitchens

Slavery is an institution that has gone back thousands of years in many places all over the world. In some places, it may well exist today. To say that the Cathlic Church supported it, is singling out one of many and is unfair. The world civilization evolved over thousands of years and now such practices are frowned upon. That is all.

“None of the atheists I know would say absolutely that there is no god. Both the existence and non-existence of god are impossible to prove, so the rational atheist says simply: there is insufficient evidence to support belief in a god, therefore I don't believe in god. This is not an absolute position, just a logical conclusion.”

“There is not enough love and goodness in the world to permit us to give any of it away to imaginary beings.”

“Public statements of non-belief are treated as threatening, an affront to the religious, while the reverse is not true. More concerning is the enduring assumption that religious belief does not have to earn respect like any other view, an approach that has caused politicians and public figures across the UK to withdraw from asking the vital question: why is religion given such special status in government, culture and the media? Why is belief in a higher power an indication of greater moral fortitude, character and acumen?”

-Richard Dawkins

“A lot of humour is based on popping the self-inflated worth of blinkered people who strongly believe they are right with no regard for any other view. Religion provides plenty of source material for this demographic.”

“You have to question the authority of any religion that discourages discourse. It is only in total isolation that a religion is able to practice the kind of mind control necessary to keep the sheep in line.”

“Religions are ideas, which should not be accorded automatic respect. Like all ideas they should be challenged, probed, and tested. With ideas, only the fittest should survive.”

“Within the clerical system the repentant priest-abuser is easily forgiven – repeatedly – by the power of absolution; the innocent child-victim is abandoned with the undeserved psychic burden of guilt and shame.”
