James, i don't care what you do with your site....I just hate that every story I have ever written is not always at the top to the bottom of the page..... Other than that one tiny slip up....everything's kewl!
optix I have had a thread up on the future group for a over month regarding css. No, I wont call you to discuss it. I lost my phone 6 months ago and love it.
We can debate your feelings/opinions optix or mine (and I got plenty). Or we can fix the css, which, I believe is possible , even here on ning, and with out the use of a god forsaken telephone :)
Hmm... can't we all come to a happy medium with this new change? I agree that there's way too much info crammed at the top of the page... maybe refining it a bit with just links to the content, discussions, vids, groups, etc... without the individual posts underneath? And possibly placing it either on the side of the pages or right under the heading 12160 and site links?
BTW Optix... love your 12160 template. Damn... I wish we could just get off of ole ningalinger already!
I understand the feelings of some regarding the stat sheet on the top. I was quite surprised myself and felt a little bit lost. I reloaded two or three times before to understand that I had to go further. I might agree that it is not the best spot mostly for the new members. You get used of it after a while but unconsciously you do not look at it and so maybe one miss the news and the admin miss the point.
Look the problem is, I am sick of generating 90pct of the views to your post.
I didnt get the help I sought, and ths is what we get. It is also an inconvenience to me, whom reads, literally and statistically proven, 30 times more than anyone else here.
Consider it for the greater good, and get over your selves thank you.
Hwood, its Gawd with a capital G :)
If you think a site like this could be run by a majority or even less, a vocal minority, you are quite wrong.
I agree with those who have suggested that the content on the top of the page be abbreviated. There could be Headings like "Top Videos & Discussions" (or Featured Videos & Discussions), "Top Photos" (or Featured Photos), etc. and one section titled "Latest Content" to enlist all the posts (discussions, blogs, videos and photos) posted in the last 2 to 6 hours (2-6 hours is just a hypothetical time-frame, in reality it could be whatever you deem fit). The titles can be hyperlinked to respective content pages.
At present, it requires one to scroll far too much to reach the main site sections. Hence, instead of enlisting each post title under the main heading, putting only the main headings hyperlinked to respective content will save one from going on scrolling to reach the main page and, I think, it will also make the website layout more systematic and appealing in appearance.
But I have to say I was watching the Main Room last night and the people were complaining, I told them the format changed from time to time to be patient.
I think you've got the right idea. May have been a bit overdone to be honest. My suggestion: do what you've done, just make it far more condensed. Give it one heading and call it "BEST OF 12160 8-13-2013" and feature 10-15 top stories that MEMBERS have posted.
Shows that:
A) you update the website daily
B) you value member participation
C) you care about members making an effort here. Views will increase substantially giving people a sense of accomplishment because the stories important to them are being seen. Thus, they are making a difference and will value their time on 12160 that much more.
I have to add James, I have a hard time with this and it is not for a selfish reason. It is because I have a slow running computer (internet) and I sometimes can not get to the story before I have to reload my page. It is taking such a long time to get it pulled up, if I were a new person I would probably not try as hard and therefore not respond. Then ultimately go to another site out of frustration. Just saying from a slow internet provider persons point of view.
If maybe it could be on the side of the page it may not take so long to scroll to the story the person was initially going to look at.
It is a good idea but needs to be modified in some way or shortened. Maybe on the main page only with the top line reading something to the effect, (These are things of interest, have look before scrolling down to main forum, thank you.)
I love it too, but I kinda agree with Freedomrox and Vincent. When I go to a story/article it is at the top. I almost never found my page cuz it was at the top...had to figure out that I had to scroll down.
If one of our priorities is to get our message out, having an obnoxious link list on top of the site worked. The stats do not lie. The fact simply is, very few spend time reading our post, and the majority of our viewers are non members that breeze through here via sites like WRH. When the link list above was huge, the amount of pages read tripled over all. That is significant. As a result we gained new members, generated more comments by more members and pissed off a vocal minority in the process.
Sadly for us IMO, a majority of the membership here are more interested in checking their own post for comments, recognition and perhaps praise . This is in addition to the crappy platform we are renting courtesy of a single fine lady that paid for it, makes surfing difficult.
Changing the CSS site design will be better on the eyes but it will not make people change their habits. Anyone have a plan for when our time and money is gone here? A half a year left on that.
You all have been provided this space to reach out, and many of you have. A few even spent time posting status updates about it. Unfortunately like your status updates and many of our post, this will go unseen and un commented on.
Despite one or another taking a personal view on this decision, or me - be assured I have been doing this for a long time, and know what is best for the site, even if it a temporary experiment. This site has never been static, yet change comes abruptly and consensus never ending. Show some fn patience, and respect wont ya ?
optix, may i ask what you intended the meaning of the word caveat to be. I am not trying to be rude, I will tell you I did not know the word so I looked it up and the definition I found did not make sense so I am asking you for your meaning of the word. Did you mean cavere?

James,
Would it be possible to have a fat lettered long ban across the top that is a quick link to all that info???
A header above the header? Or would that take all the fun out of scrolling;)?
