I have a hard time blaming people for this sort of thing. I once read a science fiction story about a planet inhabited by intelligent birdlike creatures. One day, the fact leaked to the population that their sun was going to explode. And there was nowhere to go, nothing to do about it. So they most all descended into debauchery, drugs, etc. Everybody knows, on some level, what the future holds.
