Welcome to the Ham Radio group. Ham Radio is what's used when nothing else is working. CB is limited to a small piece of the radio spectrum, about 1% as much as what's available to Hams. Legal amount of transmitting power for CB is much lower as well. On a 5 watt CB you might get from one side of a county to another, whereas 5 watts on a Ham rig has the potential to reach Australia. Getting your first Ham license isn't hard, espcially for someone with a decent level of radio experience, now that the requirement for Morse Code is gone.
Ham radio covers the shortwave bands. It also covers some of the longwave bands at 6 meters and below. AM is short for Amplitude Modulation, and FM is short for Frequency Modulation.
