MMR Vaccine: Fact Vs. Fiction
Health officials said they are encouraging those who have not received the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, and those who have only received one dose of MMR, to be vaccinated as soon as possible.
Children should receive the MMR vaccine on or after their first birthday, followed by a second dose at 4 to 6 years old.
Columbus Public Health is holding special clinics for the MMR vaccine on a walk-in basis, Monday through Friday, at Columbus Public Health at 240 Parsons Ave.
MMR Clinic hours are Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.; Tuesdays from 10 a.m.-7 p.m.; and Wednesdays from 8 a.m.-noon. Vaccines are provided on a sliding fee scale.
The vaccine can be obtained at your family physician, internist, pediatrician, pharmacy clinics, student health services, and county health departments.
Some of the male students who initially contracted the virus live in the Sigma Chi fraternity house located on East 15th Avenue, near the OSU campus.
Symptoms of the mumps are similar to the flu and include a fever, headache, muscle aches, tiredness, swollen glands under the ears or jaw, and a loss of appetite. The virus can be spread through saliva and symptoms can last anywhere from seven to 10 days, according to doctors.
The virus has an incubation period of 23 days, so doctors say anyone who may have contracted the virus will likely see symptoms when they return from spring break next week.
Health officials say if you suspect you might have the mumps it is important you visit a doctor so the case can be documented.
Anyone who is not immune from either previous mumps infections or from vaccination can contract the mumps virus.
