Dissecting Operation High Roller

How the high-tech mantra of “automation and innovation” helps a multi-tiered global fraud ring target high net worth businesses and individuals. Building on established Zeus and SpyEye tactics, this ring adds many breakthroughs: bypasses for physical multi-factor authentication, automated mule account databases, server-based fraudulent transactions, and attempted transfers to mule business accounts as high as €100,000 ($130,000 USD). Where Europe has been the primary target for this and other financial fraud rings in the past, our research found the thefts spreading outside Europe, including the United States and Colombia.

Executive Summary

McAfee and Guardian Analytics have uncovered a highly sophisticated, global financial services fraud campaign that has reached the American banking system. As this research study goes to press, we are working actively with international law enforcement organizations to shut down these attacks.

Mike Rivero has an unusual take on this story but one I personally find quite plausible. The bitcoin operation in which people 'Mine' pieces of encrypted data in order to gain access to bit coins (a digital form of fiat currency) may have been used to get bitcoin miner dupes to decrypt banking encryption algorithms in order to facilitate such attacks.

If this is true than it is also likely that we will eventually discover that this was done to add a layer of deniabilty between U.S. and/or Israeli intelligence operatives and the operation in question. The purpose? Well, more dictatorial control of the internet and demonization of internet freedom of course. Hackers, hackers, everywhere there are hackers, fear, fear, fear.

The quick exposure of flame and stuxnet as U.S./Israeli operations shows them to be rather heavy handed and clumsy in implementation even if quite sophisticated as pieces of software. This however would be as remarkable form an operational standpoint as Stuxnet is from a software standpoint.

Nothing concrete in this regard yet but something that could well be worthwhile for the dedicated hardcore researcher to look into.
