Ferguson Protests - Vandalism SPREAD Across the Country

From The Washington Post: People demonstrated silently outside the White House Saturday afternoon against what they called police brutality in the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson and called for the prosecution of the officer who shot an unarmed black teenager.

The protest was organized by Autumn Colbert, 30, a licensed Maryland social worker who described herself as a “concerned citizen” over the shooting of Michael Brown. The demonstration was not affiliated with any official group.

“I was completely shocked and stunned even though it’s happened before,” Colbert said of the shooting of an unarmed black man. “I had to start organizing.”

Colbert started posting on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram about the protest, where most said they had heard about the event. Colbert added that she wanted to protest in front of the White House “because we need to bring it to the national stage.”

“This shows systemic problems in police forces across the country,” said protester Adrien Schless-Meier, 24.

From The State: CHAPEL HILL --- A group of self-proclaimed anarchists smashed windows and spray-painted police cruisers Thursday at the Chapel Hill Police Department as a show of "solidarity" with an imprisoned Atlanta man and rioters in Missouri.

Anarchists smashed the back windows out of three cruisers in the department's parking lot at 828 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. according to a police report and an online blog post from the group (http://bit.ly/1t3g2WI). The group spray-painted another car with the words, "For Luke," reports said.

The crime took place shortly after 3 a.m. Thursday, according to the police report. The damage was estimated at $2,200, the report stated.

"This was done as a small gesture of solidarity with Luke O'Donovan, of Atlanta, GA, who was recently sentenced to two years in prison for defending himself against five homophobic attackers. We hope this brings a smile to his face," the anarchists posted to the Prison Books Collective blog.

The blog is affiliated with the activist Internationalist Books and Community Center in downtown Chapel Hill.

"We also carried out this act in solidarity with the rioters and looters of Ferguson, MO, who, in the face of continued brutality by racist police, have inspired the world with their courageous resistance against the forces of state, capital, and white supremacy. May their insurrection spread," they said.

O'Donovan was attacked by a five to 12 men shouting homophobic slurs after leaving a New Year's Eve party in December 2012. He defended himself using a pocketknife and managed to escape, but was arrested and charged with five counts of felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and one count of attempted murder.

O'Donovan, facing up to 110 years in prison, accepted a plea deal. He is serving two years in a Georgia state prison and will be on supervised probation for eight more years.

Chapel Hill police are investigating the vandalism but did not respond immediately to a call for more information.

From KCCINews: DES MOINES, Iowa The shooting death of an unarmed 18-year-old in Ferguson, Missouri, inspired a protest in Des Moines Saturday.

An organized group waved signs and chanted to passing vehicles Saturday afternoon at the corner of 19th Street and Forest Avenue.
