Jon Stewart & SOPA (please)
"Tomorrow night," announced host Jon Stewart at the beginning of The Daily Show yesterday, "our guest will be the Internet."
The odd intro came about thanks to a redditor, who showed up to a Daily Show taping yesterday with VIP passes. Knowing he would have a chance to ask Stewart a preshow question, the redditor pondered ideas and settled on SOPA, the hugely controversial Stop Online Piracy Act now being considered in Congress. "The Internet sent me to ask you what you think of SOPA and why you haven't mentioned it on the show," he said to Stewart.
Stewart wasn't familiar with SOPA, asking if it was related to net neutrality, but admitted that his team had been consumed with the presidential election race recently. He promised to look into SOPA, and turned to one of his writers when he said it. At the show's open, Stewart then made a reference to SOPA and added, "I have some reading to catch up on."
This time, the OP delivered. Yesterday, before the taping of the Daily Show, a Reddit user told its community that he had a VIP ticket to the show, and asked how he could raise the issue of SOPA to Jon Stewart. According to many on the social link site, the Daily Show has been nothing if not silent on the Stop Online Piracy Act. The Reddit userbase took up the opportunity as a way to, potentially, spread their message against SOPA.http://thenextweb.com/socialmedia/2012/01/12/reddit-user-ventures-to-the-daily-show-gets-jon-stewart-to-talk-sopa-on-air/
Jon Stewart, host of the popular comedy “news” program The Daily Show, is finally going to tackle SOPA, the controversial, anti-Internet piece of legislation that has every social network up in arms.
“Tomorrow night,” the host said during last night’s broadcast, “our guest will be the Internet.”
A redditor was present at the taping of last night’s show, and during the pre-show period, he asked Stewart why he’d been silent on SOPA.
If you want to take real action, here’s how you can write or call your Congress members now.
As the redditor in question posted on Reddit, “I wanted to get the word out that I was able to ask Jon during the Q&A before the show what his thoughts on SOPA were and why he hasn’t talked about it. His answer was that they’ve had their heads so far up the election’s ass that they may have missed it. He then said he’d look into it, and mentioned it during the opening of the show!”
As last night’s show opened, Stewart mentioned SOPA, saying, “I have some reading to catch up on.”
“Jon looked directly at one of his writers when he said he would look into it, so I’m really really hoping to see a follow up on it in the coming days,” said the redditor.
