Guerrilla Army of the Poor [EGP] in Guatemala, 1970s - formed in '72 in attempt to help protect indigenous villages from that government's army, para-military and private death squads -- also had small section in Universidad de San Carlos. Really a long story but CIA et al overthrew democratically elected govt in 1954 and mild civil war began. This transformed into series of dictatorships which, by 1996, had killed and disappeared roughly 200,000 Guatemalans with large number more sufferring state sponsored torture - much of what was learned there was slightly later used in VietNam and even Argentina. [Remember, Guate. is about size of Ohio and pop. is 50% indigenous (Mayan) used mostly as laborers
