The point has been made, and it is oft cited, that with the advent of the internet, one can attain expert level fluency in a technical field. Of course, there are things you can't learn off a screen. Before the internet, in the late 80s, I read actual books to educate myself in alkaloid chemistry and neurochemistry, and later, millions of dollars changed hands because of my ideas. When the internet arrived, though, I spent every free moment learning from it, often waking up at the desk. Like a wise man once wrote, "The only criteria of success is results", not conformity to established methods. Doctors didn't cure my autism or sleep apnea (or several other problems). "Karen on Facebook" may be the best place to go for answers, in this age.
