Police departments around the country are using handheld devices called Stingrays that act exactly like a cell phone tower and can listen in to any conversation they want to and identify the exact location the phone while it is being used. They do this with soft tips from people and from dumping the phones of people they arrest.  Then they just sit back and listen. Many times making an arrest and saying that the information that was gathered using the Stingray was actually a confidential informer. The Police Departments are under a sealed order not to divulge the source (Stingray) for ANY court case so if your attorney is sharp and knows the local police use them,  if the evidence "stinks" of lack of supportive material ( a CI would have multilple dates, places, other conversations, etc. than it should seem quite apparent that a Stingray was used to obtain the evidence. One case is on the way up to the Supreme Court , but in the mean time, let people know these active listening devices are in use. The real problem is that it doesnt just pick up the criminal's calls, it picks up everyone in the area no matter who they are and what they are doing. Dont let the police try to keep this dirty secret any longer.
