Nice, all of what you guys are saying is true.  Black is a bad idea and any true ninja would know that haha, dark blues and reds are alot better than black in a low-light setting.  I'm impressed.  In any case, I would like to dye my gear and I will look into techniques for doing so.  Or perhaps there are temporary dyes, chalks or pastes that I can use on the fly...

I realize that I'm probably carrying too much weight.  Everything in my backpack is not exactly trivial but I'm prepared to throw it off my back and leave it somewhere if need be.  It's mostly long-term survival gear and if it can be helped I'll keep it.

I had no idea that night vision and infra-red could illuminate certain dyes more than others!  That's great to know.  I will take that into consideration before I dye my gear.  I'm thinking either ERDL, woodland, or the tiger stripe camo except with colors other than orange and black.  I'll think about it.

Thanks for the comments

swat wear black for the intimidation factor. take it from someone whom has trained shinobi iri, black doesn't work at all. dark shades of blue or even dark shades of red are better. black is for the movies and knuckle head darth vader swat teams. camo is meant to first break up silhouette, the thing that gives you away second only to movement. after that camo should break up human features such as jaw line, the eyes, shoulder and arm...

as laser pointed out, your camo should be adjusted to your operational setting. if urban, it should be conducive to that environment. although, in an uraban setting camo is not really required. the tactical focus should be on blending in with the population, not standing out as, "the suspect heading west in black mask and dark clothing."

the katana is cool, as I have a couple myself, one expensive and razor sharp but prob not the best option for modern war. special forces would tell you, in the brush, travel light as you can and anything that can double for something else should be preferred. travel as light as possible.

Also check your gear with night vision and an IR illuminator to make sure you dont have reflective dyes in your gear. Some manufacturers have been known to do that on purpose so you "glow" when viewed by a night sight with IR.

I'm tellin ya you should go tiger stripe or woodland, black uniforms are worn by the enemy usually. At least you have an AK and allies will be able to differentiate by sound and sight of weapon... hopefully.
