A salad in a decent restaurant would cost a lot more than $5. But we know the one in the photo is from a fast food restaurant because it's in one of those disposable bowls they use. I agree suzie, homemade is always the best. I would only resort to eating a fast food salad if I were traveling or stuck somewhere and had no other option.  And the dressing they give you will contain high fructose corn syrup for sure plus many other chemicals, so much for a healthful meal.  If it's a Mexican restaurant you can ask for salsa to use as a dressing which would be a better alternative.

As for the cost of bottled water, it depends on where you buy it.  We ran out of bottled water at work one day and I drove to the gas station and one bottle of water cost $2. You can buy a whole case on sale for $3 sometimes. I pay 75 cents for a gallon of water to have in case of an emergency.

I think it use to be that fast food was real cheap and poorer people could get a real cheap meal. Now its just plain stupid. For 5 dollars you can buy a head of lettuce, a tomato, an onion, and maybe a cucumber and organic too! If you invested in a bottle of vinegar and some olive oil your going to eat salad for a few days.. People have just become lazy, it more expensive and easier to just buy that Mickey D's burger and get ( I find this incredible, but I used to eat this sh*t ) you get instant gratification and a full "feeling " I think food stamps will buy fast food these days but I could be wrong on that and if 5 dollars is off I think no more than 7 dollars would buy the stuff for a home made salad for at least a few days ...

It's easy to explain. Fresh whole food has a shelf life and requires more preparation. Serving healthy food is counterintuitive to the economics of the fast food industry.
