A Black Lives Matter chapter is launching a “Black Xmas” initiative to urge people to buy from black owned businesses during the holidays to “resist white capitalism.”
Black Lives Matter Los Angeles called on people to refuse to buy from white owned businesses and take that money to invest in the black community from Nov. 25 to Jan. 1. 2018. The boycott serves as an attempt to resist President Donald Trump and his ties to white capitalism, the group added.
“Donald Trump embodies White capitalism. If you are anti-Trump, you should hold back your resources from him and the like,” the organization said on its website.
Dr. Melina Abdullah, a Black Lives Matter organizer and professor of Pan-African studies, further explained that the boycott is rooted in Black Lives Matter’s attempts to get rid of state-sanctioned violence, that is often found in “white-supremacist capitalism.”
“This season, more than all others, Black Lives Matter is asking people to wake up, to be conscious of our own economic power, and to protest – not just in the streets – but in the malls,” Adbullah wrote in a 2016 op-ed for The Los Angeles Sentinel. “Black Lives Matter is dreaming of and building for a #BlackXMas, where we divest from White corporations and invest in building Black community. Rather than lining the pockets of Trump and other White-supremacist capitalists, donate to Black-led organizations that are building new, liberatory structures in our communities.”
