Ever since its inception, the FDA’s influence has steadily grown over the products consumed by millions of Americans and over the choices the American people are able to make regarding those products. For many, the FDA stands as America’s gold standard and a voice by which to measure all things regarding food and pharmaceuticals as well as a number of other substances.

For those who value freedom of choice, however, the FDA has come to be viewed as a pariah due to its blatantly obvious attacks on natural supplements, natural food and the health of the people it was allegedly created to protect.

Still, the pharmaceutical industry, medical industry, Big Agri, and the corporate press will use the words of the FDA, an organization so thoroughly controlled and influenced by the very industries who quote it, as the standard by which all knowledge and claims regarding consumable products should be measured.

With that in mind, it is often beneficial for a brief reminder of the type of advice and approval given by the FDA in the past. Below are five poisons that the FDA has approved and which continue to affect us today on a wide scale.

Mercury

One of the most widely controversial poisons approved by the FDA would be that of mercury and its presence in a number of different vaccinations. Thimerosal, a mercury-based preservative approved by the FDA, was once present in many vaccines. Only as a result of massive outcry due to known neurotoxicity was it removed or reduced to trace amounts in many vaccines. But the FDA never banned or discontinued the use of the compound. It merely reduced the amounts of it present in some vaccines to placate the public. Thimerosal is present in the Influenza vaccine as well as in a number of vaccines given to young children. Of course the FDA’s version of a preservative-free vaccine still contains Thimerosal. It should be noted that the average flu vaccine contains an amount of Thimerosal that is 25 times higher than the level that is considered toxic by the EPA. Mercury has been tied to a number of adverse health effects such as heavy metal toxicity, neurotoxicity, and autism.

GMOs

Despite links to cancer [1], gastrointestinal disorders and the inherent instability of genetic modification as a process, the FDA has been content to approve GMOs under their ridiculous of “substantial similarity” to natural food [2]. This should come as no surprise since the FDA and Monsanto are the textbook definition of the corrupt revolving door policy. Substantial similarity paved the way for the FDA’s approval of Monsanto’s rBGH -a genetically engineered artificial hormone injected into cows to make them produce more milk. The FDA has now allowed a situation to exist where Americans must join a “movement” to fight for access to natural and healthy food.

Fluoride

To be accurate – the FDA has not approved fluoride or fluoride supplementation despite its widespread use in toothpaste, mouth rinse, bottled water and local water supplies (the FDA did, however, require a poison warning added to toothpaste). The FDA has never launched a campaign to approve or disapprove of the product for consumption. Thus, we might go so far as to consider the FDA’s silence on fluoride as a tacit approval. After all, natural supplements and herbs that have been around since the beginnings of known history routinely become victims of an FDA jihad. These supplements are sought out and purchased unlike tap water which essentially amounts to forced medication. Fluoride has been linked to calcification of the pineal gland, lower IQ, cancer, bone damage, endocrine disruption, diabetes, kidney disease and thyroid disease.

BPA

Another ubiquitous industrial chemical approved by the FDA is bisphenol-A or BPA. BPA is present in everything from food packaging to receipts and has been linked to such adverse health effects as hormone disruption, brain and behavior problems, cancer and heart damage. Millions of Americans come into contact with this chemical in a variety of its forms in untold amounts everyday. One can only imagine what would happen if the FDA focused on chemicals like BPA instead of vitamins like B-17.

Vioxx

One of the most notorious approval disasters in the FDA history, the agency which claims that raw milk is a danger to human health approved a pharmaceutical named Vioxx in 1999. As a result, 88,000 Americans had heart attacks and 38,000 of them died. One could only imagine if these individuals had been killed by guns. If so, it would have been labeled a genocide. If 38,000 Americans had died of raw milk contamination, a generation of Americans would be born never knowing what a cow or a glass of milk looked like. If only a fraction had been killed by an herb, the smoke from burning fields would be seen from outer space. When 38,000 were killed from Vioxx, the FDA said “oops.” It was finally removed from the market in late 2004.

With the track record of the FDA and all of its corporate ties, no reasonable person would ever suggest that the agency is the gold standard in food and health advice. It has made too many mistakes to be given the authority to limit the choice Americans have regarding their health, particularly when those individuals have educated themselves and are making their choices knowingly.
