Too bad this isn’t only a bad movie plot

A lack of national standards puts the US at risk of accidents at labs conducting research on biological germs, such as anthrax and the plague.

This, according to a report by the Government Accountability Office.

Another recent audit found security and safety lapses at bioterror labs nationwide.

Here’s an astounding number: Nearly half of the 2.4 million American troops who battled in Iraq and Afghanistan are struggling with life on the home front

About 44 percent of them are fighting to reconnect with family, find jobs or attend classes, according to The Institute of Medicine.

More than 10 years of war and several hundred deaths later, the Pentagon is finally reviewing its 900 suicide prevention programs to see if any of them actually work.

Last year 349 troops killed themselves, the most ever recorded.

A report is due out this fall.
