Legislation signed into law by President Barack Obama on August 2, 2011, creates a new "Super Congress," a bipartisan group of 12 lawmakers responsible for proposing a plan to cut more than $2 trillion in government spending. Common sense dictates, 21st century technology enables *and citizens should demand* that this committee operate as transparently as possible in order to earn the confidence of the American people.
The Center for Responsive Politics is part of a coalition calling for this committee to post online its findings and recommendations. The public needs advanced notice of its agendas and proposals. Live webcasts and archived video of all official meetings and hearings would help Americans follow these crucial deliberations. And online disclosure of all meetings with lobbyists and receipts of campaign contributions would allow citizens to monitor the actions of the committee and the special interests trying to influence the process.
