An Invitation to a Stranger
Night after night being alone
Please don’t tell me I’m in the zone
Seems my life has been accident prone
Intellectual extrapolations are far flown,
Dreaming of shoulders draped with long hair
The ghost of a lover no longer there
In the final analysis who really cares
An invitation to a stranger if you dare,
It is what it is that’s all I can say
Keeping the rats in my skull at bay
Wondering when the Lord will enter the fray
Would it have made any difference if you’d stayed?
I see the drama played out everyday
Who will abandon and who will have the heart to stay
Those who give are likely the ones who pay
Less women with maternal instincts these days,
The eternal inner enemy of man
His own destructive inner nature wasn’t planned
Those followers of Jesus who ran
Thankfully there were those who defended this land,
It is what it is in the dark realm of night
When all vestiges of goodness are out of sight
Memories of the past the essence of my plight
That’s when I pray to you Lord as my guiding light,
I’ve fallen short I know this is true
No need to lie you can see right through
I’m sure you know even when my life’s askew
The mystery that escapes me I never knew.
