An asteroid was recently dicovered this past Monday (4/11) at an observatory in Spain. It will reach as close as .0056 AU today and travel even closer towards Earth early tomorrow morning (~533,000km). It has been reported that this Asteroid 2011 GP59 does not pose a risk as it's path has been determined. The only problem is that this 50 m rock was only discovered 4 days ago! That small amount of time could not have possibly provided an efficient range of past progressive motions for thorough evaluation. For example, Comet Elenin's path has been altered countless times due to newly identified performance observations. Also, it is possible for asteroids, comets, and the like to change their trajectories due to a number of natural occurances. Though I'm sure this is highly unlikely and the professionals at Spaceguard are correct in their findings. If anything, tonight's passage could provide for a "neat" show in the sky around Virgo and Hydra.
